Frequently Asked Questions
What is Children’s Book Week and when does it take place?
In 2024, Children’s Book Week is celebrating its 105th anniversary. We will continue to celebrate with two weeks of events: May 6 to 12 and November 4 to 10. Both of 2024’s celebrations will offer resources and celebration ideas to support educators, librarians, booksellers, and caregivers as they continue to work with kids and lift up their communities. Free resources, downloadable materials, and creative ideas will specifically encourage young people to become actively involved in celebrating Children’s Book Week and connecting with their communities in whatever ways are safe.
Children’s Book Week was launched in 1919 and is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. In 2019, the 100th anniversary, over 2,000 libraries, bookstores, and schools hosted Book Week story times, activity hours, and more. Learn more about Children’s Book Week here.
Children’s Book Week is not only a celebration of books, but of connection. It is a vehicle to unite kids and adults with books, authors, and illustrators in order to foster a love of reading.
How can schools, libraries, and bookstores participate in this national celebration?
This year, we invite classrooms and schools, public and school libraries, bookstores, and other organizations to host events (both in-person and virtual) during the week while also encouraging young people and families to celebrate at home. All are welcome to sign up to participate and will receive two free Book Week posters by the amazing Rilla Alexander. We will continue to offer celebration ideas that can be tailored to any sized group and adjusted for your unique needs.
How can I sign up for Children’s Book Week?
Registration is now closed for Spring Children’s Book Week. You can still participate and access all of our amazing free resources. Sign up for our newsletter to learn more about registration for Fall Children’s Book Week.
How can authors and illustrators get involved?
We invite all book creators to join in on their social media channels during the week. You can post videos, do a live stream story time, answer fan questions, and more. Tag your posts with #ReadBooksSparkChange so readers everywhere can find the special things you are doing during the week. You can also set up virtual visits with schools, bookstores, and libraries.
