Bookmarks 2023

As an annual tradition of Children’s Book Week, esteemed children’s book illustrators are chosen to create bookmarks that celebrate kid lit and reading. This year, five artists have contributed their beautiful and inspiring artwork keeping with the theme, Read Books. Spark Change. These bookmarks are available to print and distribute to children, teens, and book lovers everywhere!

These year’s illustrators are Alfreda Beartrack-Algeo (7th Generation/Native Voices Books), Lian Cho (Chronicle Books), K. O’Neill (Random House Children’s Books), JeyOdin (The Quarto Group), and Briana Mukodiri Uchendu (Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing).

About this year’s bookmark creators

Alfreda Beartrack-Algeo (7th Generation/Native Voices Books)

Alfreda is an enrolled citizen of the Kul Wicasa Oyate, Lower Brule Lakota Nation in South Dakota. Alfreda grew up immersed in the oral traditions of her culture. She has a deep connection to the natural world that comes through in her stories and illustrations.

Alfreda works with the 7th Generation Book Publishers, where several of her books have received notable ratings. Her picture books include, The Day the Earth Rose Up, Father Eagle and the Hunter, Cottonwood Sings, and How Oceans Came to Be, a picture book that she illustrated for a fellow author. Her teen novels include Legend of Big Heart: The Land Grab, Legend of Big Heart: The Roan Stallion, and Legend of Big Heart: The River Run. Alfreda encourages her young readers to never stop believing in their dreams and not be afraid to let their imaginations soar. Lian Cho (Chronicle Books)
Lian Cho was born in Taiwan and spent her childhood amongst the sheep in New Zealand. Now she lives in Brooklyn and is the illustrator of quite a few absurd books for kids, including The Oboe Goes Boom Boom by Colleen AF Venable, and It Began with Lemonade by Gideon Sterer. She hopes to one day learn how to quilt, but in the meantime, she enjoys baking copious amounts of banana bread, watching terrible movies, and creating small felt creatures. | liancho.com.

K. O’Neill (Random House Children’s Books)
K. O’Neill is an author and illustrator based in Aotearoa New Zealand, and a lover of nature, tea, and growing things. They strive to make books with themes of kindness, inclusiveness, and well-being, with worlds that children can play in and characters they can explore these ideas alongside. Past acknowledgments of their work include: 2019 Eisner nominee for Best Children’s Comic (Aquicorn Cove), 2018 Eisner winner for Best Children’s Comic, 2018 Eisner winner for Best Webcomic, 2018 Harvey co-winner for Best Children’s Comic, 2018 Dwayne McDuffie Award winner for Kids’ Comics (The Tea Dragon Society), 2017 ALA Amelia Bloomer List, 2017 Dwayne McDuffie Kids’ Comics Award nominee (Princess Princess Ever After). | ktoneill.com.

JeyOdin (The Quarto Group)
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the manga artist Jey Odin attended Savannah College of Art and Design, where he majored in Sequential Art. In addition to Saturday AM, many top publishers have published this prolific artist, including Antarctic Press, USA Today, and Oni Press. Known for his infectious laugh, Jey’s hobbies are drawing and reading comics, watching movies, listening to music, and having fun in general. When not creating comics, Jey is a fan of spending time in his home in Georgia with his wife and two hilariously cute dogs. | Instagram @jeyodin.

Briana Mukodiri Uchendu (Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing)
Briana Mukodiri Uchendu is an illustrator, visual development artist, and a first-generation Nigerian American. Her work is inspired by her interests in folklore, film, and animation and her passion to highlight voices that usually go unheard. A recent graduate from Ringling College of Art and Design where she majored in illustration, she currently lives in her hometown of Houston, Texas.
