About Rilla Alexander

Rilla Alexander grew up in the country, in Australia, with her little sisters, Fiona and Emily. They had a sandbox and swings in the backyard, and a playhouse called Sunshine Cottage, which was made out of a rainwater tank. Nowadays, Rilla is an illustrator, author, and designer and lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Steve, and their puppy, Spot. She has written many picture books and board books, including The New Rooster and Touchwords.

“I was thrilled and honored to be invited to design this year’s Children’s Book Week Poster and immediately sat down to explore the amazing archive of posters,” said Rilla. “For the theme Read Books. Spark Change I kept coming back to the butterfly effect. And how, even if you’re small, you can make a big difference.”

“With pencil on paper, I started to sketch butterflies and books,” Rilla continued. “I discovered a child putting a book onto their back like a backpack, ready for a journey, and using the book as wings to take off like a butterfly. In the process, our hero shows a caterpillar that it can change and fly too. Eventually I realised the pages of the open book were the spark, inspiring imagination and creativity.”

Rilla is the creator of Hippo Park Pals, a series of miniature picture books (Herbert on the Slide, Fiona in the Sandbox, and the forthcoming Herbert Climbs to the Top and Fiona on the Swings) published by HIppo Park, an imprint of Astra Books for Young Readers.
