Since 1919, Children’s Book Week has been celebrated across the United States. The longest-running literacy initiative in the country, it is not only a celebration of books, but of connection.
At its core, Children’s Book Week is a vehicle to unite kids and adults with books, authors, and illustrators in order to foster a love of reading. It gives teachers, librarians, booksellers, and parents/caregivers a structured but fun twice-a-year occasion to celebrate books and their importance. There is an immediate sense of connection in knowing that kids from coast to coast are celebrating books all at the same time.
Now, more than ever, we have to find creative ways to remain connected with our friends, classmates, and communities. Celebrating Children’s Book Week this fall is one of many ways adults can encourage a sense of community and connection. The activities and tools in this kit can be utilized for at-home and in-person learning by teachers and parents.
This year’s Book Week slogan is Read. Dream. Share. The activities in this kit are divided into three sections which invite kids to read books both familiar and new, engage their imaginations by dreaming big, and share those books and dreams with their wider world.
